Hon Frank Amoakohene warns illegal Miners to vacate, issues a two week ultimatum:
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has issued a strict two-week ultimatum to illegal miners operating in forest reserves and water bodies within the region, warning them to vacate these areas or face severe legal action.
This directive forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, which has led to widespread environmental degradation, including deforestation, pollution of vital water bodies, and destruction of farmlands.
Speaking at a media engagement in Kumasi, Dr. Amoakohene reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting the environment and ensuring sustainable development. He emphasized that illegal mining poses a serious threat to the livelihoods of many Ghanaians and must be tackled decisively.
“The government will not sit idly by while our water bodies are destroyed, our forests depleted, and our farmlands rendered useless. We are giving all illegal miners operating in these protected areas two weeks to vacate or face the full force of the law,” Dr. Amoakohene stated.
The Minister’s engagement with the media also covered key developmental issues, including infrastructure expansion, economic growth, and unemployment in the region. He also touched on recent security concerns, including the Obuasi killings, and assured the public that authorities are working diligently to address them.
In addition, he acknowledged the upcoming football clash between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC, recognizing the significance of sports in uniting communities and boosting local economies.
