Atwima Kwanwoma: Assembly Raises Alarm Over Land-Related Violence at Atwima Twedie; Appeals to Asantehene for Urgent Intervention

Atwima Twedie, Ashanti Region-The General Assembly of Atwima Kwanwoma District has raised serious concerns over a surge in land-related violence allegedly orchestrated by some local chiefs within the district.

At a heated meeting held on Monday, 30th June at the Assembly hall, Atwima Twedie, aggrieved Assembly members condemned what they described as a growing trend of intimidation and brutality being carried out by armed groups, locally known as machomen or targs, believed to be acting under the direction of certain traditional leaders (chiefs and Adikro).

The Assembly revealed that these actions have already resulted in the tragic deaths of some residents, while others have been severely injured and are currently receiving medical attention in critical condition.

Representatives from electoral areas including Foase,Afrancho Kyekyebon,Aburaso,Yabi, and Twedie were vocal in their appeal, calling for urgent and decisive intervention. They issued a collective plea to His Majesty Otumfuor Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene and Overlord of Asanteman, to step in and help bring an end to the rampant chaos.

“We are humbly appealing to His Majesty the Asantehene to use his high office to calm the rising tension. He remains our revered King and custodian of peace in Asanteman,” one Assembly member stated.

The Assembly emphasized its unwavering respect for the Golden Stool and reiterated that the Asantehene is the only authority capable of mediating among the traditional leaders and restoring peace in the area.

Members warned that if the current trend is not addressed swiftly, the unrest could spiral into a wider crisis, jeopardizing peace and stability across the entire Atwima enclave and beyond.

The call comes amid increasing pressure on both traditional and state institutions to resolve land disputes fairly, particularly in rapidly expanding communities where land ownership is fiercely contested.

In her response, the District Chief Executive for Atwima Kwanwoma, Honourable Grace Agyemang, called on the assembly members to remain calm, stating that several steps have been taken to ensure peace and unity throughout the area.

According to her, she has written to nearly all the traditional authorities and leaders, seeking to establish mutual collaboration with the Assembly and security agencies in order to protect the lives of the people.
