“It’s More of a Spiritual Blessing to Give Back to One’s Alma Mater Than to Receive” – Catholic Priest Urges Ghanaians

A Catholic priest, Reverend Father Louis Akwasi Akuoko Sarpong of Saint Theresah Catholic Church, Nweneso No.1, has called on Ghanaians to view giving back to their alma mater not just as an act of charity, but as a profound spiritual responsibility and blessing.

Speaking during the official dedication of a new church building funded by Honourable Kwadwo Anthony Yeboah Asare, former Assembly Member and former Presiding member for Atwima Kwanwoma district Assembly and native of Nweneso, Rev. Father Sarpong emphasized that giving back is a spiritual investment in future generations.

“There is greater spiritual fulfillment in giving than in receiving,” he said, drawing on biblical teachings to highlight the enduring value of generosity. “Your alma mater helped shape who you are today. Giving back is a way of honoring that foundation and allowing others to benefit from the same or even better opportunities.”

Father Sarpong praised Honourable Asare’s who had basic school education from Nweneso No1 R/C School for his generous contribution as a shining example of service and devotion to one’s roots. He urged both locals and those abroad to contribute to community development through mentorship, infrastructure support, scholarships, and other meaningful initiatives.

He further explained that giving back doesn’t have to be financial. Acts such as mentoring young people, volunteering time, and advocating for institutional support are equally powerful. “These efforts strengthen the bond between individuals and their former schools or churches, and help uplift the moral and spiritual fabric of society,” he said.

Father Sarpong’s message resonated deeply with the congregation, especially among those who had benefited from Catholic education and faith-based upbringing.

His appeal underscores a growing call for community members to take active roles in shaping the future of educational and religious institutions that once nurtured them, turning personal gratitude into collective progress.
