Atwima Mponua MP Supports 90 SHS Freshers With School Items;Pledges GH¢20,000 For Teachers’ Welfare
Seth Osei Akoto raises concern over poor performance of boys,links trend to illegal mining;100 tertiary students also to benefit from scholarship scheme

The Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua Constituency in the Ashanti Region,Hon. Seth Osei Akoto,has supported 90 newly-admitted Senior High School (SHS) students in the constituency with essential educational items to help them begin their secondary education with confidence.
The items,which included mattresses,trunks,chop boxes and stationery,were presented to the beneficiaries at a ceremony held at the Nyinahin Presbyterian Church on Tuesday,September 15, 2026.
The beneficiaries were selected based on their outstanding performance in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Speaking in an interview during the presentation,Hon. Seth Osei Akoto said the initiative formed part of his commitment to improving education and creating opportunities for young people in the Atwima Mponua Constituency.
He noted that supporting brilliant but needy students was necessary to prevent financial difficulties from becoming a barrier to their education.
Concern over boys’ performance
The MP,however,expressed concern over what he described as the uninspiring performance of some male candidates in the constituency.
According to him,the situation could partly be attributed to the involvement of some young boys in illegal mining activities, commonly,referred to as galamsey, which he said was affecting their commitment to education.
He therefore called for stronger efforts by parents,teachers,traditional authorities and other stakeholders to discourage children from abandoning their education for illegal mining activities.
Hon. Osei Akoto stressed the need to invest in the education of young people,particularly boys, to equip them with the knowledge and skills required to contribute meaningfully to the development of the constituency and the country.
GH¢20,000 pledge for teachers’ welfare
The MP also commended teachers in the Atwima Mponua District for their dedication and commitment to educating children despite the numerous challenges confronting the education sector.
As part of efforts to motivate teachers, Hon. Seth Osei Akoto pledged GH¢20,000 towards the welfare of teachers in the area.
He explained that the gesture was intended to complement existing efforts by the education authorities and help address some welfare-related challenges affecting teachers.
The MP further raised concern about staff inadequacy within the education directorate,noting that some teachers are reluctant to accept postings to deprived communities.
He appealed for greater cooperation among stakeholders to ensure that schools in underserved communities receive the required number of teachers.
100 tertiary students to benefit from scholarship
Hon.Osei Akoto further disclosed that,in his quest to improve educational outcomes in the constituency,he had instituted a scholarship scheme for 100 tertiary students from Atwima Mponua.
According to him, the scholarship initiative is aimed at supporting students who have successfully progressed to the tertiary level but may face financial difficulties in pursuing their programmes.
He said the various interventions were part of a broader vision to improve educational standards and increase access to quality education across the constituency.
Education Directorate commends MP
Speaking on behalf of teachers in the district, the District Director of Education for Atwima Mponua,Ama Adwubi Asafo-Adjei,expressed gratitude to Hon.Seth Osei Akoto for what she described as his unflinching support for education in the district.
She assured the MP that teachers would continue to work diligently to improve the academic performance of students and raise the overall standard of education in the district.
According to her,preliminary statistics from the 2026 BECE indicate a significant improvement in the district’s performance compared with previous years.
She,however, explained that the Directorate was yet to conduct its routine School Performance Appraisal Meeting (SPAM),where the BECE results would be thoroughly analysed.
She said the meeting would enable education authorities,teachers and other stakeholders to identify areas that require further improvement and develop appropriate strategies to sustain the progress achieved.
The District Director commended parents,teachers,school authorities and other stakeholders for their contributions to the improvement recorded so far.
She called for continued collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure that the gains made in education are sustained and further improved.
The initiative by Hon.Seth Osei Akoto,she noted,demonstrates the importance of strong partnerships between political leaders and education stakeholders in addressing challenges confronting schools and students in deprived communities.
