Hands Off Wontumi Radio: Ashanti NPP Youth Wing Fights Media Gag

The Ashanti Regional Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed strong outrage over the sudden closure of Wontumi Radio by the National Communications Authority (NCA).

According to the group, the move is not only an attack on press freedom, but also a deliberate attempt to silence the vibrant voice of the NPP grassroots.

“Wontumi Radio in Kumasi, Accra, and Takoradi has become a household name — creating jobs for young people, giving ordinary Ghanaians a voice, and serving as a hub for open political discourse,” the statement stressed.

The Youth Wing described the action as hypocrisy at its peak, accusing President John Dramani Mahama of double standards.
“It is ironic that Mr. Mahama, who once condemned the closure of Radio Gold and other pro-NDC stations as undemocratic, is today presiding over the shutdown of Wontumi Radio. Is media freedom only sacred when it favours the NDC?” the group asked.

The statement also condemned the harassment of journalists, particularly the arrest and detention of Akyemkwaa Nana Asare, a presenter with Wontumi Radio and TV, describing it as “a dangerous affront to democracy.”

The Youth Wing vowed never to sit unconcerned:

“We will resist every attempt to use state institutions as tools of political witch-hunting and oppression.”

They further called on civil society, democracy advocates, and well-meaning Ghanaians to rise against what they say is a dangerous precedent.
“Ghana’s democracy must never be sacrificed on the altar of partisan interest,” the statement concluded.
