The Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua, Hon. Seth Osei Akoto, has taken a bold step to strengthen education in the constituency by recognising outstanding teachers and top-performing students at the maiden edition of the “Heroes of Education” Awards held on Friday, October 10, 2025.

The colourful event, attended by traditional leaders, education officials, parents, and students, celebrated excellence in teaching and learning key priorities in the MP’s drive to raise educational standards in Atwima Mponua.

Delivering his keynote address on the theme “Empowering Teacher Commitment Through Motivation,” Hon. Osei Akoto described teachers as the “true architects of the nation’s future.” He said the awards programme is designed to inspire educators and learners to pursue academic excellence with renewed passion and purpose.

Thirteen educators, including one non-teaching staff, were honoured with 43-inch flat-screen televisions, gas burners, and certificates, while 23 BECE top performers received trunks, chop boxes, and mattresses to support their transition to senior high school.

Hon. Osei Akoto also expressed concern about the recent BECE and WASSCE performance in the district, urging education stakeholders to collaborate on a comprehensive improvement plan by the end of the year.

In a major policy move, the MP announced the establishment of a Scholarship and Capacity Development Scheme to support brilliant but needy students and enhance teachers’ professional training.

“This is only the beginning,” he said. “We are building a future where no teacher or student is left behind due to lack of motivation or resources.”

Award recipients described the recognition as a morale booster, while students promised to work harder to make the constituency proud.

Touching on challenges affecting the teaching profession, Hon. Osei Akoto lamented the rising cost of accommodation in the district, describing it as one of the major factors driving teachers away to other areas.

“One of the biggest burdens teachers face today is the high cost of accommodation,” he noted. “I appeal to landlords and landladies to show understanding and reduce rent charges. This will go a long way to help retain teachers and sustain quality education in our constituency.”

The event, graced by the District Chief Executive, District Director of Education, and several traditional leaders, received widespread praise for its vision and impact.

The Heroes of Education Awards is expected to become an annual flagship initiative, celebrating excellence, innovation, and dedication to educational progress in Atwima Mponua and beyond.
