MTN Ghana is set to invest US$202 million in newly awarded spectrum as the telecommunications giant moves to significantly expand network capacity, improve service quality and accelerate the rollout of high-speed 5G connectivity across the country.
The development follows notification from the National Communications Authority (NCA) that MTN Ghana has been awarded spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands for 5G and mobile broadband services.
The licences will be valid for 15 years, giving MTN Ghana additional spectrum resources to meet the rapidly growing demand for data and high-speed connectivity.
Under the allocation,MTN Ghana will receive two 20 MHz lots in the 700 MHz band and 150 MHz in the 3 GHz band.
The company is expected to pay a total of US$202 million for the spectrum, comprising US$100.9 million for the 700 MHz allocation and US$101.1 million for the 3 GHz allocation.
Major Network Capacity Boost
MTN Ghana said the newly acquired spectrum will complement its existing spectrum holdings and provide additional capacity as demand for mobile data and high-speed internet services continues to surge.
The company expects the investment to strengthen network performance, improve service reliability and enhance the overall customer experience.
“Following the issuance of the spectrum licences, the Company will deploy the 5G spectrum in addition to its existing spectrum stock, to strengthen network capacity, enhance service quality, and improve customer experience across Ghana,” the company said.
5G and Home Broadband Expansion
Beyond mobile services, the additional spectrum is expected to play a critical role in MTN Ghana’s plans to expand 5G connectivity and home broadband services.
The increased network capacity will allow the operator to support more high-speed connections while handling growing data traffic from households, businesses and other users.
The deployment is therefore expected to strengthen MTN Ghana’s ability to scale up 5G services and provide faster and more reliable connectivity to customers across the country.
Payment and Licensing Process
MTN Ghana said it is currently finalising the formal requirements and payment obligations associated with the acquisition of the spectrum.
According to the company, the spectrum payments have already been incorporated into its equity free cash flow outlook, signalling that the investment has been factored into its financial planning.
The US$202 million spectrum acquisition represents a major expansion of MTN Ghana’s spectrum resources and reinforces the company’s commitment to investing in next-generation telecommunications infrastructure.
MTN Ghana said it would continue to update the market on material developments as it completes the licensing process and progresses with the deployment of the newly awarded spectrum.
The move is expected to position the company to meet rising demand for faster connectivity while supporting the continued growth of Ghana’s digital economy.
