The Catechist of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Peace Assembly at Sokoban in the Atwima Kwanwoma Municipality of the Ashanti Region, Catechist Samuel Annan, has called on stakeholders, philanthropists and financially capable individuals to invest in technical and vocational training as part of efforts to address youth unemployment.
He stressed that equipping young people with practical skills would create opportunities for self-employment, promote financial independence and enable them to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s socio-economic development.

Catechist Annan made the appeal when a seasoned journalist and member of the church, Mr Ofori Boateng Samuel, donated a sewing machine to a seamstress apprentice in the congregation to support her vocational training and development in the garment-making industry.
According to him, vocational training remains an important pathway to empowering young people to acquire employable skills, establish their own businesses and become economically self-reliant rather than depend solely on limited formal employment opportunities.
He therefore urged individuals, religious organisations, private businesses and other stakeholders to support young people undergoing apprenticeship training by providing the equipment and resources they need to develop their skills and build sustainable livelihoods.
Journalist supports seamstress apprentice

Explaining the motivation behind the donation, Mr Ofori Boateng Samuel said the gesture was intended to provide practical support to the beneficiary and help her develop the skills needed to build a career in the garment-making industry.
He expressed the hope that the sewing machine would enhance her practical training, improve her sewing skills and prepare her to establish herself professionally in the future.
The donation highlights the important role individuals and community members can play in promoting vocational education and helping young people work towards economic independence.
Such interventions can provide apprentices with essential tools to complement their training, strengthen their practical abilities and prepare them for future self-employment.
Beneficiary expresses gratitude

The beneficiary expressed profound gratitude to Mr Ofori Boateng Samuel for the donation, pledging to take good care of the sewing machine and use it effectively to improve her skills.
According to them, the support would contribute significantly to her apprenticeship and help prepare her for a career in the garment-making industry.
The donation also highlights the importance of bridging the gap between vocational training and access to the equipment apprentices need to practise their trades and become financially independent.
Call for collective action
Catechist Annan’s appeal underscores the need for sustained collaboration among religious institutions, government agencies, private businesses, philanthropists and individuals to expand access to vocational training and empower young people.
He maintained that providing apprentices with practical skills and the necessary tools could create opportunities for self-reliance, encourage entrepreneurship and contribute to efforts to reduce youth unemployment.

Editorial perspective: Investing in skills for a better future
As Ghana continues to pursue youth empowerment and economic development, increased investment in technical and vocational education could help more young people transform their skills into sustainable livelihoods.
Beyond financial assistance, providing apprentices with essential equipment, mentorship and opportunities to develop their practical abilities can help prepare them for the demands of the job market.
The sewing machine donation by Mr Ofori Boateng Samuel serves as a reminder that meaningful community support does not always require large-scale interventions. Even a single piece of equipment can help an apprentice advance towards professional competence and economic independence.
Greater commitment from individuals, religious bodies, businesses and other stakeholders could therefore help create more opportunities for young people to acquire skills, establish businesses and contribute to national development.
