“We Won’t Be Moved”-Tontonkrom Vows to Resist Military-Backed Land Grab

“We Won’t Be Moved” -Tontonkrom Vows to Resist Military-Backed Land Grab

The people of Manso Tontonkrom, a peaceful and resilient community in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region, are under threat not just from corporate interests, but from state-sanctioned force.

On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the community awoke to the shocking sight of over 200 armed military personnel flooding into their town. No warning. No engagement. Just boots on the ground, carrying rifles,in what many now see as an aggressive show of force intended to intimidate and silence the people.

This deployment comes just days after Tontonkrom residents held a peaceful press conference, where they boldly rejected claims that they were to be evicted or relocated from their ancestral lands. The community strongly suspects that this sudden militarized presence is part of a larger agenda — an alleged collaboration between Asanko Gold Mine and politically connected actors seeking to take control of local lands for expanded mining operations.

When brave residents confronted the armed personnel and questioned their mission, the response was chilling:

“We’re here on orders from above to inspect a mining pit claimed by Asanko Gold.”

But to the people of Tontonkrom, that land is not a pit. It is home. It is heritage. It is identity.
They see this act for what it is: an attempted land grab, backed by force. And they are not staying silent.

The chiefs, elders, youth, and women of Tontonkrom have issued a clear and united message saying,

“We will not be moved. We are not squatters. We are custodians of our own land. If our ancestors defended it without guns, we too will defend it with our voices, our unity, and our truth.”

They are calling on the following authorities to take immediate action:
    H.E. the President of Ghana.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The National House of Chiefs and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and
Civil society groups, religious leaders, and the international community.
