Government Pledges commitment to address all mining disputes-Hon Mireku Duka assures:
In his powerful emotional impact or bittersweet address to avoid any future conflicts following a tragic incident involving the death of 35-year-old one Rahman Mohammed and injuries to three others, Hon. George Mireku Duker, Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and MP for Takwa Nsuaem, has said as part of precautionary measures to prevent further loss of life related to mining concessions,the ruling government together with other stakeholders are making sure that,this untimely incident will be no more.
The incident occurred during a confrontation between residents of Manso Tontokrom in the Amansie South district of Ashanti region and the private security guards employed by Asanko Mining Company over disputes concerning mining rights.
In a nostalgic delivery,Hon Duker described the confrontation as “unacceptable” and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and injuries sustained. During a recent engagement with Asanko Gold’s management and residents of Manso Tontokrom in the Amansie South district, Duker emphasized the urgent need for resolution and expressed the government’s commitment to addressing the dispute. He assured that measures would be taken to implement a community mining scheme designed to ensure safer and more equitable mining practices. The aim is to create a framework that allows local communities to benefit from mining operations while minimizing conflict and ensuring their safety.
Supporting these efforts, Hon.Yaw Frimpong Addo, Member of Parliament for the good people of Manso Adubia and Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, has pledged his dedication to establishing a community mining scheme for Manso Tontokrom. Addo underscored his commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to develop and implement a scheme that will provide sustainable benefits to the local population and foster lasting peace in the area.
On his part Mr Kwabena Animonyam, the unit committee chairman for Manso Tontokrom, has also voiced his gratitude towards the efforts of Hon. Duker, Hon. Addo, and Hon. Clement Opoku Gyamfi. Mr Animonyam highlighted the critical need for a structured and official mining plan to address the community’s concerns and prevent future conflicts or occurances. He has called for the expedited launch of the community mining scheme, emphasizing the importance of timely action to restore stability and ensure the well-being of the residents.
