Residents of Mile Nine in the Amansie Central District have demonstrated a renewed commitment to environmental cleanliness following a well-attended Monthly Sanitation Day exercise spearheaded by the District Environmental Department.
The exercise, which formed part of the government’s nationwide sanitation campaign, was strongly supported by the Assembly Member for Mile Nine Electoral Area, Hon. Simon Kwadwo Antwi. The clean-up initiative witnessed massive participation from residents, Assembly staff, opinion leaders, and youth groups, reflecting a growing awareness of the need to maintain a healthy and hygienic environment.
Call for Provision of Sanitation Logistics

Addressing participants during the exercise, Hon. Simon Kwadwo Antwi passionately appealed to the District Chief Executive and other district authorities to equip Assembly Members with essential sanitation materials and equipment.
According to him, providing tools such as wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels, refuse sacks, and protective gear to Assembly Members would significantly enhance efforts to maintain cleanliness at the grassroots level.
He emphasized that Assembly Members, being the closest link between the people and the District Assembly, are strategically positioned to supervise and coordinate sanitation activities within their respective electoral areas.
However, he noted that the lack of adequate logistics often hampers their ability to deliver effectively.
“If we are serious about promoting and projecting cleanliness in our communities and the country at large, then we must empower Assembly Members with the needed sanitation tools to ensure cleanliness right at the doorsteps of individuals,” he stated.
Hon.Antwi further encouraged other communities within the district to emulate the commendable example demonstrated by the people of Mile Nine.
Environmental Officer Commends Residents
The District Deputy Environmental Officer, Charles Feakpi, popularly known as “Efo,” urged residents to refrain from open defecation despite the community’s challenges with inadequate toilet facilities.
He commended them for their impressive turnout and active participation, describing the exercise as encouraging and a clear indication that the people of Mile Nine are ready to partner with the Assembly in promoting sanitation and public health.
He assured the community that the District Assembly has strategic development plans in place and remains committed to improving living conditions across the district.
Residents Express Appreciation and Raise Concerns
In a show of unity, residents expressed profound appreciation to Hon. Simon Kwadwo Antwi for his dedication and consistent advocacy for the welfare of the Mile Nine community.
They praised him for carrying the concerns of the area at heart and tirelessly pushing for development.
However, they also used the opportunity to highlight pressing challenges confronting the community, including:
Lack of a public toilet facility,
Inadequate access to potable water,
Poor street lighting, affecting security and daily activities

Residents passionately appealed to the District Chief Executive and relevant authorities to urgently intervene and address these challenges to improve their standard of living.
A Step Toward Sustainable Development

The successful sanitation exercise at Mile Nine underscores the critical role of community participation, responsive leadership, and institutional support in promoting environmental sustainability.
As the call for logistical support gains momentum, stakeholders remain hopeful that timely intervention by the District Assembly will further strengthen sanitation efforts and accelerate development within the electoral area.
The initiative stands as a testament to what can be achieved when leadership and community spirit work hand in hand toward building a cleaner, healthier, and more progressive society.
