ILLEGAL MINING (GALAMSEY) IS GRADUALLY POSING SERIOUS THREATS TO BOTH COMMUNITY HEALTH AND SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE…
The Country Director for Touton- Eliho Ghana a Cocoa Purchasing Company Mr.Ernest Dwamena has expressed his worry over an increasing cutting down of Cocoa trees for illegal mining ( GALAMSEY) .
He therefore pleaded with Cocoa farmers to stop selling their cocoa farms to illegal miners because Cocoa has been the backbone of Ghanas economy since the time of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah till now. He added that though it good to mine Gold but it equally important to maintain our Cocoa farms.
He continued that, the contamination of water bodies due to these activities poses a serious threat to both community health and sustainability of agriculture..
He made this statement at the Announcement of the 2023- 2024 Crop Year Premium Payment at Assin Fosu with the theme: Building Resilient Cocoa Farming Communities Celebrating Achievements and Committing to Future Growth.
He again urged Ghanaian farmers to take farming very serious because it will go a long way to help us individually and the country as a whole.
He emphasized that the Loyalty Bonus being distributed to over 47240 farmers across 38 district is GHC 41,288,689 which is Gh 68 per bag of Cocoa which is a sign of appreciation to the farmers.
Some of the Purchasing Clerk and Farmers who received the premium expressed their gratitude to Touton-Eliho company for helping them in this critical times….
