A devastating fire has ravaged a building adjacent to the Old Central Market in Kumasi, destroying several shops and jeopardizing the livelihoods of numerous traders and business owners.

The Ashanti Caucus in Parliament has expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending heartfelt sympathies to all affected individuals and families.

This latest fire outbreak is part of a troubling pattern of increasing fire incidents in the Ashanti Region, which continue to wreak havoc on businesses and local economies. In recent months, several major fire disasters have been recorded in key commercial hubs across the region, including:

Suame Magazine Fire, A devastating fire swept through Suame Magazine in February, destroying about 25 spare parts shops and 34 vehicles, leading to massive financial losses for business owners and artisans.

Kwadaso Wood Market Fires, The Kwadaso Wood Market has been hit twice by fire outbreaks within a month, with the most recent incident in January reducing dozens of shops and warehouses to ashes, leaving traders in despair.

Konongo Mining Stores Fire, A raging fire at the Konongo Mining Stores in March wiped out numerous businesses, compounding the woes of traders and residents in the area.

Adum Market Fire, A massive fire engulfed parts of Adum, one of the busiest commercial centers in Kumasi, on March 21, 2025, destroying shops, businesses, and valuable merchandise.

The Ashanti Caucus has called on the Minister for the Interior to take immediate steps to investigate these recurring fires and implement comprehensive measures to prevent further occurrences.

The government has also been urged to adequately equip the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) with modern firefighting equipment, water supply infrastructure, and sufficient personnel to respond effectively to emergencies.

The Ashanti Region, as a major economic hub, cannot afford to suffer from these disasters without a decisive response from the authorities.

The Ashanti Caucus demands urgent action to protect lives, livelihoods, and investments in the region, and assures all those affected of their unwavering support.
