A leading Ghana’s telecommunications company,MTN Group, has confirmed a cybersecurity breach that exposed personal data of some customers in certain markets, including 5,700 customers in Ghana. The breach was caused by an unauthorized third-party intrusion into MTN’s systems, but the company assures that its core network, billing systems, and financial services infrastructure remain secure.

Mrs Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, early indications sugest that,MTN is working closely with leading cybersecurity experts to conduct a thorough forensic investigation.

The company is taking proactive measures to contain and manage the incident, ensuring the security and integrity of its systems.

MTN will directly contact affected customers to inform them of the breach and provide guidance on mitigating risks.

To protect customers from potential fraudulent activities, MTN recommends keeping apps and devices updated, using strong, unique passwords, being cautious of suspicious messages and links, not disclosing sensitive information via phone, text, or email, and activating multifactor authentication.

The company prioritizes customer data privacy and assures stakeholders that it is committed to safeguarding system integrity and trust.

MTN will provide updates and guidance throughout the investigation. Affected customers will be contacted directly.

MTN encourages customers to remain vigilant and follow regular security measures to mitigate potential risks.
