MTN Ghana Launches Nationwide Campaign to End Digital Violence Against Women and Children

MTN Ghana has launched a nationwide campaign as part of this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, focusing on the theme “Unite to End Digital Violence Against Women and Children.” The initiative is being implemented across multiple regions to raise awareness on harmful online behaviors and promote safer digital spaces.

The launch event brought together more than 100 students from the Police Depot Cluster of Schools in Tesano. Addressing the gathering, Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, emphasized that the campaign is designed to protect vulnerable groups, particularly women and children, from increasing forms of digital abuse.

She revealed that MTN is working closely with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) and the Cyber Security Authority to intensify public education on online safety.
“Society already understands physical gender-based violence, but abuse has now extended into the digital space,” Madam Wiafe explained. “Cyberbullying, harassment, and other harmful online behaviors disproportionately affect women and girls. As we promote access to a modern digital life, we must also ensure that the online environment remains positive, empowering, and safe.”

ACP Owusuaa Kyeremeh, Director of DOVVSU, also underscored the escalating threat of digital violence.
“With a single click, harmful videos can go viral, personal information can be stolen, or threats can be issued,” she said. She added that girls and young women are especially at risk of coercion, hacking, harassment, and the non-consensual sharing of private images, many cases of which remain unreported.

ACP Kyeremeh urged students to take an active stand:
“Do not be bystanders. Be the generation that chooses to stop digital violence.”

As part of the broader awareness campaign, MTN and DOVVSU are undertaking a series of nationwide activities, including regional radio sensitization programmes, school debates on preventing digital violence, community engagements, film screenings, and victim support sessions aimed at strengthening online safety.

The event also featured an interactive session on cyber hygiene and responsible online behavior, led by Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi, Director of Cybercrime, together with an MTN representative. A student who showed exceptional engagement during the discussions was presented with a tablet.

The 2025 campaign reaffirms MTN Ghana’s commitment to promoting responsible digital practices and safeguarding the online environment for women, children, and all digital users.
