    Ashanti Region;
    Kumasi High Court remands 14 over Damongo election violence

    A Kumasi High Court has remanded 14 individuals into prison custody for their alleged involvement in violent disturbances during Election Day in Damongo, Savannah Region.

    Sixteen people appeared before the court, but 14 were remanded, while two minors were discharged.

    The violence occurred following delays in the declaration of election results, which led to one fatality and the destruction of the Electoral Commission office. Protesters, reportedly frustrated by the delays, stormed the Damongo Municipal Collation Center and set the EC office on fire, causing extensive damage.

    Due to security concerns, the case was transferred from the Savannah Region to the Kumasi High Court.

    The accused persons face nine charges, including unlawful damage, assault, causing harm, and obstructing electoral officers in the performance of their duties.

    The State Attorney requested a deferral of the plea to allow more time for investigations, while the defence counsel sought the release of their clients, noting that two of the accused are minors.

    The court ordered the minors’ release to a responsible guardian, Alhaji Imoro Seidu, who was required to leave his Ghana Card with the Court Registrar.Sports tourism packages

    Pleas will be taken at the next hearing on December 19, 2024.

    The remaining accused persons were remanded into custody as investigations continue.
