Bringing Back the Glory Days of the NPP: A Call for Unity, Discipline and Purpose
The New Patriotic Party has, over the years, earned a reputation as one of Ghana’s strongest democratic institutions. Beyond electoral victories, the party has been admired for promoting constitutional governance, encouraging intellectual debate and nurturing leaders who have contributed significantly to Ghana’s democratic development.
One characteristic that has consistently distinguished the NPP is its ability to accommodate diverse opinions while remaining united around a common purpose. Healthy internal debate has always been one of our strengths. However, debate achieves its purpose only when it ultimately strengthens the party rather than weakening public confidence in it.
As a party currently in opposition, our greatest responsibility is to provide Ghanaians with a credible, disciplined and policy-driven alternative government. This responsibility demands that our energy and attention remain focused primarily on national issues affecting the lives of ordinary citizens.
Recent public disagreements among party members have attracted widespread attention. While differing views are natural in every democratic organization, prolonged public exchanges risk shifting the national conversation away from the challenges facing Ghanaians and towards our own internal affairs. This is neither politically advantageous nor consistent with the image the NPP has historically projected.
The completion of the flagbearer election and the ongoing internal party elections present an opportunity to turn a new page. Internal contests are a normal feature of democracy, but once they are concluded, the collective responsibility of every member is to rally behind the party’s shared vision and prepare for the larger national contest.
Victory in 2028 will not be secured solely through campaign slogans or large membership numbers. It will depend on discipline, unity, strategic communication, effective grassroots organization and the confidence that Ghanaians place in our ability to govern responsibly.
Politics is often described as a game of numbers. While numbers are important, success depends on good numbers—members who are committed to the ideals of the party, respect its structures and place the collective interest above individual preferences. A united membership driven by shared purpose is far more valuable than a divided membership of greater size.
The NPP should once again become known for respectful engagement, thoughtful policy discussions and disciplined communication. Internal disagreements should be addressed through the party’s established structures rather than prolonged public exchanges that can unintentionally undermine public confidence.
At the same time, we must not lose sight of our constitutional role as the leading opposition party. Ghanaians expect us to examine government policies critically, highlight areas where implementation may fall short, present constructive alternatives and champion policies that improve the lives of citizens. Our relevance depends not only on pointing out weaknesses but also on demonstrating that we are prepared to govern better when entrusted with power again.
Every polling station executive, electoral area coordinator, constituency officer, regional executive and national leader has an important role to play in rebuilding confidence in the party. Electoral victory is not achieved in the final months before an election; it is built gradually through consistent organization, community engagement, disciplined messaging and sustained public trust.
History has shown that the NPP performs best when it remains united behind a common purpose. Our greatest victories have come when individual ambitions gave way to collective determination and when our focus remained firmly on serving Ghana.
The road to 2028 has already begun. This is the moment to renew our commitment to the principles that have always made the NPP a formidable political force: unity, discipline, integrity, service and intellectual leadership.
If we recommit ourselves to these values, restore confidence within our ranks and keep our attention fixed on the aspirations of the Ghanaian people, the glory days of our party will not simply be remembered, they can be rebuilt.
