Bryan Fires NPP:Why Run From Tamale Fight?

Abetifi MP says party must rise above emotions, contest every battle:

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Bryan Acheampong, has taken a swipe at the party’s leadership for its decision to pull out of the upcoming Tamale Central by-election scheduled for September 30, 2025.

The Abetifi lawmaker described the move by the party’s Steering Committee as a “strategic blunder,” insisting that the NPP must not allow emotions to overshadow political calculation.

“The NDC always shows us the way-no emotions. We hurriedly decided not to contest in Tamale Central, but they said they would contest in Akwatia. If it were up to me, I would have contested Tamale. A by-election is a by-election,” Acheampong declared in Twi at a campaign stop.

He cautioned party faithful against choosing the next flagbearer on the basis of sentiment, stressing that only a candidate capable of winning power in 2028 should be trusted with the mantle.

The NPP’s controversial decision followed the tragic death of Tamale Central MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, which claimed eight lives.

In its August 11 announcement, the Steering Committee explained that contesting the by-election would be “inhumane and unconscionable,” arguing that allowing a smooth replacement would honor the memory of the late MP and safeguard peace in the constituency.
