Florida Vice Mayor Found Dead; Husband Charged with First-Degree Murder

A tragic incident has shaken the city of Coral Springs following the death of Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, who was allegedly murdered by her husband in what authorities have described as a domestic violence case.

According to police reports, the 38-year-old vice mayor was found dead in her bedroom after officers conducted a welfare check when she failed to attend scheduled official meetings, including a city commission session.

Investigators revealed that her body was discovered wrapped in a comforter and trash bags. At the scene, officers also found three spent shotgun shells and a pillow believed to have been used to suppress the sound of gunfire. An affidavit indicates she was shot three times.

Her husband, Stephen Bowen, 40, has been charged with premeditated first-degree murder and evidence tampering. Authorities allege that after committing the act, he left their home and went to a relative’s residence in Plantation, where he confessed to the crime.

According to investigators, Bowen reportedly told his uncle he carried out the act because he “couldn’t take it anymore,” citing ongoing arguments between the couple.
He has since been arrested and is currently being held without bond at the Broward County Jail.

The late Metayer Bowen, an environmental scientist, made history as the first Black woman elected to the Coral Springs City Commission. Colleagues and residents have described her as a dedicated public servant and trailblazer whose loss is deeply felt across the community.

City officials have condemned the incident as “devastating” and are urging individuals experiencing domestic violence to seek help and support.
