MTN MOMO @15: Ghana Card Has Drastically Reduced Fraud Incidents- Manager says

MTN Ghana Northern Sector General Manager of Sales, Mr. Nii Adottey Mingle, has attributed the significant reduction in Mobile Money (MOMO) fraud to the introduction of the Ghana Card.

Speaking at the launch of MTN Mobile Money’s 15-year anniversary celebration, Mr. Mingle noted that the unified national ID system has made it more difficult for fraudsters to operate.

Prior to the Ghana Card’s introduction, Mr. Mingle explained that the existence of multiple IDs for MOMO registration created an environment conducive to fraud. However, with the Ghana Card, individuals need only one verified ID to conduct transactions, drastically reducing the incidence of fraud.

“With the introduction of the Ghana Card, the incidents of fraud have been reduced.
Because previously the country had about 5 different IDs for the registration of MOMO, and it was easy for fraudsters to dupe people. But since the inception of the Ghana card, we have only one unified ID which is not so easy to claim because one needs only one card before he can do a transaction, so it has drastically reduced MOMO Fraud.” He told the press in an interview.

Mr. Mingle expressed optimism about the future of fraud prevention, citing ongoing regulatory efforts. He said that MTN is working hard to educating the public not to disclose their PINs to a second party, thereby eliminating MOMO Fraud.

He predicted that fraud would become a rarity in the years to come.
The 15th-anniversary celebration of MTN Mobile Money highlights the service’s impact on Ghana’s financial landscape.

“With what is happening in the regulatory space now, I’m very sure, years ahead, fraud will be a thing of the past.” He predicted.

Since its inception, MTN Mobile Money has revolutionized financial transactions, providing convenience and accessibility to millions of Ghanaians.

The event was marked by festivities and reflections on the journey of MTN Mobile Money, with Mr Mingle’s remarks underscoring the company’s commitment to innovation and customer protection.
