NPP’s Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Applauds Mahama’s Economic Management: “Inflation Down, Cedi Stable-They’re on the Right Track

Former Minority Leader hails NDC government’s impressive economic turnaround

In a rare show of bipartisan praise, former Minority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has commended President John Dramani Mahama’s administration for what he described as “impressive and encouraging” economic management over the past nine months.

Speaking on Lawson TV, the veteran New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker acknowledged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has made notable progress in stabilising Ghana’s economy.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu pointed to key improvements, including a reduction in inflation, a stronger cedi, and effective implementation of the gold board policy.

When the NPP left office, inflation was around 21 percent. But now, the NDC has achieved a single-digit inflation rate, that’s a huge positive, he said.

He further praised the administration for its handling of interest rates, noting that while the NPP had lowered bank rates from 32 to 22 percent, the Mahama government has gone further to bring them down to 18 percent.

On the exchange rate, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu added:

“When we left office, the cedi was trading at 16 cedis to the dollar. Now, under Mahama, it’s about 10 cedis. That shows good management.”

The seasoned politician concluded that the Mahama-led government is “on the right trajectory”, demonstrating tangible progress toward restoring economic stability and confidence in Ghana’s financial system.
