Police Bust Ammunition Trafficking Attempt; 3 Arrested With 2,600 AK-47 Rounds

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects in a major operation that led to the interception of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition at the Kantanso-Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region.
The arrests followed a routine but intelligence-led operation conducted by police officers on duty on December 26, 2025, when they stopped a Kia Granbird passenger bus with registration number GT 5771-18, travelling from Accra to Paga via Walewale.
The first two suspects, identified as Kwame Afram, a bus driver, and Godfred Essel, a driver’s mate, were arrested after a thorough search of the vehicle uncovered two concealed containers packed with live AK-47 ammunition, totaling 2,600 rounds.
The ammunition had been carefully hidden in an apparent attempt to evade detection.
Following the initial arrests, police intelligence led to the apprehension of a third suspect, Mohammed Siisu, aged 21, who was picked up on December 27, 2025, at Walewale. He is believed to be the intended recipient of the ammunition consignment.
Further search of the bus resulted in the recovery of additional suspicious items, including two bulletproof plates, a black crushed helmet, and a pair of long boots, which were hidden beneath the driver’s seat. Police say the nature of the recovered items raises serious security concerns and strengthens suspicions of organised criminal activity.
The suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations, while the bus and all recovered exhibits have been impounded for evidential purposes.
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to clamping down on arms trafficking and related criminal activities, particularly during the festive and end-of-year period, when security risks tend to increase.
