Scrap Dealers in Ashanti to Introduce ID Cards to Curb Attacks and Misidentification

New initiative aims to protect members from mob justice and clear misconceptions about their work

The Ashanti Regional branch of the Scrap Dealers Association has announced plans to introduce official identification cards for its members as part of efforts to curb rising cases of false accusations and mob attacks.

According to the Regional President, Abdulai Jagala, many legitimate scrap dealers have become targets of violence due to widespread misconceptions that associate their trade with criminal activity.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News reporter Kwadwo Obeng Mireku, Mr.Jagala emphasized that members of the association are law-abiding individuals who are instead victims of a growing negative public perception.

“Over the years, genuine scrap dealers have suffered several attacks, with some members killed and others injured. To prevent these unfortunate incidents, we are introducing ID cards to distinguish our members from impostors,” he stated.
He referenced a recent mob attack at Ntensere in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District, describing the incident as avoidable if proper identification measures had been in place.

Mr.Jagala further expressed concern over the lack of arrests following the incident, calling the situation unfair and urging authorities to ensure justice while also protecting legitimate workers in the scrap trade.

The introduction of ID cards is expected to help clearly separate genuine dealers from criminals who may be posing as scrap collectors, thereby reducing tensions and improving safety for members across communities.
