Persistent Power Outages and Insecurity Threaten Academic Activities at Nkawie SHS
The Headmistress of Nkawie Senior High Technical School in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region, Madam Faustina Sekyere, has expressed grave concern over the persistent power outages disrupting academic activities and threatening student safety on campus.
According to her, the recurring electricity interruptions have severely affected teaching and learning, making it difficult for both students and teachers to maintain effective academic engagement. She noted that the unstable power supply continues to disrupt classroom activities, practical lessons, evening studies, and overall academic productivity in the school.
Madam Faustina Sekyere explained that the situation has become a major challenge for school authorities, as it continues to negatively impact students’ academic performance and the smooth running of the institution.
Beyond the academic setbacks, she indicated that the persistent blackouts have also heightened security concerns within the school environment, particularly during nighttime hours. She stressed that inadequate lighting on campus exposes students to danger, especially when they move around the school premises after dark.
The Headmistress further recounted worrying incidents in which some students were reportedly attacked while returning to school from vacation during periods of blackout. According to her, such incidents underscore the urgent need for a reliable and stable electricity supply to guarantee the safety and well-being of students.
“The frequent power outages are not only disrupting teaching and learning but also putting the lives of our students at risk,” she lamented, while calling for immediate intervention from stakeholders and relevant authorities.
In response to the growing challenges, the Assembly Member for Manso Takorase, Hon. Dominic Bonsu, popularly known as Hon. 2Pac and an alumnus of the school, extended support to the institution by donating a generator plant and financial assistance to help sustain electricity supply during outages.
Hon. Dominic Bonsu explained that his gesture was driven by his desire to give back to his alma mater and contribute towards improving conditions for effective teaching and learning. He emphasized that education remains a critical pillar of national development and therefore requires collective support from all stakeholders.
He also appealed to old students of the school, community members, and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at addressing the institution’s challenges.
According to him, improving conditions in educational institutions will not only enhance academic performance but also help shape responsible and productive future leaders.
The intervention by Hon. Bonsu has been widely welcomed by the school community as a timely relief measure as the institution continues to battle the effects of unstable electricity supply and growing security concerns.
