    AWASO STEM SHS COMMISSIONED

On Thursday, 21st November, 2024, the magnificent educational edifice, which is also described as an epic centre of excellence, was inaugurated by government officials, traditional rulers and technocrats.

In his welcome address, the Principal of the institution, Mr. Joseph Agyabeng expressed appreciation to the government for establishing the institution. He pleaded with the students to be disciplined and make good use of the facilities available to them by making the school a citadel of knowledge.

Mr. Seth Boateng, Regional Director of Education, reiterated the government’s commitment to bringing education to the doorsteps of people and making it accessible. He recounted the benefits of the Free SHS as increased enrollment, quality passes, gender parity, and cost-effectiveness. The Regional Director urged parents to educate their children since it is the foundation of development.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Paul Andoh, expressed his profound gratitude to the President for putting up such a superstructure for Awaso and its environs. The students were implored to vote massively for the NPP Presidential and Parliamentary candidates to protect the good policies. The MCE highlighted the essence of ensuring peaceful elections in December.

Hon. Alfred Obeng-Boateng, the Member of Parliament(MP) and NPP Parliamentary candidate for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Constituency, lauded the good works of the President and his Vice. The efforts of the then-education minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and the Western North Regional Minister, Hon. Kingsley Aboagye-Gyedu, were also commended for making the dream a reality.

Hon Obeng-Boateng indicated that the colossal amount of money pumped into the project was a testament to the government’s commitment to quality education for all citizens irrespective of their backgrounds. “This school’s impact will be felt for years”, the MP stated. The legislator reiterated that the restoration of the teacher trainees, nursing trainees, and non-guarantor student loan policies was indicative of the government’s unwavering support for the youth. “Anyone who hates Free SHS is against the future of the youth”, the lawmaker cautioned.

The acting chief Director of the Western North Regional Coordinating Council, representing the Regional Minister, Mr. Ali Suleman stressed that STEM education is needed to surmount current challenges. He added that the government believes in investing in intellectualism and enhancing human capital hence the establishment of such facilities. The Regional Coordinating Council’s effort to provide quality education was disclosed. Students, teachers, and administrators were told to demonstrate commitment to realize the ultimate goal.

Not long ago, STEM education was introduced in Ghana.
The initiative, part of Dr.Osei Yaw Adutwum’s agenda, aims at revolutionizing Ghana’s education system by incorporating STEM principles from the grassroots level to tertiary education. The schools are very limited but Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality was fortunate to be considered for one.

High-profile dignitaries at the function were Mrs Florence Afful-Dadzie, Municipal Director of Education; Mr Augustine Ackon, Presiding Member; Mr. Isaac Nkrumah, Free SHS Coordinator; and Nana Karikari Badu; Akwamuhene, Awaso. Others were Mr. Joseph K. Baah-Darko, Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Joshua Addae, Director 1, and Constituency Executives.
