MTN Ghana Powers Digital Future: $1 Billion Investment Fuels Nation’s Internet Revolution

MTN Ghana has once again proven its dominance in the nation’s digital transformation journey by reaffirming its commitment to building a fully connected and inclusive digital future.

Speaking at the 30th Africa Internet Summit in Accra, themed “Internet in Ghana, Today and Tomorrow,” MTN Ghana’s Chief Digital Officer, Mr. Ibrahim Misto, lauded the government and industry stakeholders for their collective role in shaping Ghana’s impressive digital trajectory.

“Ghana’s Internet growth story is a powerful reflection of our shared determination to leverage technology as a tool for progress and inclusion,” Mr. Misto noted, highlighting how the nation has evolved into a regional tech leader over the past three decades.

    From Telco to Tech Powerhouse

Mr. Misto reflected on MTN’s own transformation, describing it as a mirror of Africa’s broader digital journey.

“The story of MTN is the story of the Internet in Africa. We’ve evolved from a telecommunications company into a full-fledged technology enterprise driving innovations across data, IoT, digital, fintech, and enterprise solutions,” he said.

Since 2021, MTN Ghana has invested over US$1 billion to modernize its network, expand 4G coverage, and extend fibre connectivity to homes and businesses nationwide. This investment underscores the company’s resolve to deliver reliable, fast, and accessible Internet to all Ghanaians urban or rural.

    MoMo Driving Financial Inclusion

Mr. Misto also spotlighted the transformative impact of MTN Mobile Money (MoMo), which now serves over 17 million customers.
He emphasized that MoMo has become a vital tool for financial inclusion, empowering millions with digital financial services and fueling the country’s rapidly expanding digital economy.

Building a Smarter, More Inclusive Internet

Looking ahead, the Chief Digital Officer called for stronger collaboration among government, private sector, and innovators to accelerate Ghana’s digital progress.

“We envision an Internet ecosystem that is faster, smarter, and more inclusive. Through collective innovation, Ghana can lead Africa’s digital future — but we must build it together,” he urged.

He reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s unwavering mission to “lead digital solutions for Africa’s progress”, pledging continued investment in connectivity, digital literacy, and innovation hubs that nurture the next generation of creators and entrepreneurs.

Shared Vision for a Connected Future

Mr. Misto concluded with a powerful message of unity and purpose:

“Our vision aligns perfectly with Ghana’s ambition to become a digital powerhouse in Africa. Together, we can shape a resilient Internet ecosystem built on access, equity, and opportunity for all — ensuring no one is left behind.”

The Africa Internet Summit brought together government officials, telecom executives, service providers, tech innovators, and policy experts to chart the course for the future of digital connectivity in Ghana and across the continent.
