Galamsey Coverage Turns Tragic: GJA Ashanti Stands By Injured Journalists After Field Accident

The Ashanti Regional chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has pledged full support for a group of journalists involved in an accident while covering an official assignment on illegal mining activities in partnership with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

According to the Association, news of the unfortunate incident has been received with deep concern as reporters involved in the anti-galamsey operation were injured in the line of duty.

In a statement signed by Regional Chairman, Kofi Adu Domfeh, the GJA expressed solidarity with the affected journalists, extending thoughts and prayers to them, their families, and the media houses they represent.

The Association stressed that the safety and protection of media personnel remain a top priority, especially for journalists pursuing national interest stories in high-risk environments such as illegal mining zones.

“This incident highlights the dangers our members face daily while informing the public on critical issues. We assure our injured colleagues of our unwavering support,” the statement said.

The GJA Ashanti leadership further noted that it is working with relevant authorities to ensure that the victims receive appropriate medical and emotional care.

The Association also used the opportunity to urge state agencies, institutions and partners who engage journalists in high-risk field operations to strictly observe safety guidelines and ensure proper coordination before deployment.

It maintained that journalists continue to play a crucial watchdog role in driving attention to environmental and social issues affecting communities, hence must be adequately safeguarded.

The GJA reaffirmed its commitment to standing by its members through this difficult period, while advocating stronger safety measures for all media professionals.

    Signed:
    Kofi Adu Domfeh
