Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim Joins Parliament’s Push for Humane and Rights-Based Migration Management

Kumawu MP participates in Koforidua workshop as Parliament and key partners strengthen oversight on migration and human rights

KOFORIDUA,GHANA-Member of Parliament for Kumawu,Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim,has joined fellow legislators and key stakeholders at a field monitoring and capacity-building workshop in Koforidua aimed at strengthening Ghana’s approach to migration,human rights and the protection of vulnerable persons.

The workshop,organised by Parliament in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF),Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU),Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ),African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR),is focused on deepening participants’ understanding of migration trends,human rights frameworks and effective migration management.

Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim’s participation forms part of Parliament’s broader efforts to enhance its oversight role and ensure that national policies and programmes relating to migration are implemented in a manner that protects the dignity and fundamental rights of all persons.

One of the key issues discussed during the opening session was the need for rights-based language when addressing migration-related matters.

Participants were reminded that the term “illegal migrant” may undermine the dignity and human rights of migrants. The workshop therefore encouraged the use of the more appropriate term “irregular migrant.”

Protecting Women and Children

The workshop also examined international,regional and national frameworks on migration,with particular emphasis on the vulnerability of women and children.

Discussions stressed the need for humane,coordinated and rights-centred migration management to prevent trauma,exploitation and the exposure of vulnerable persons,particularly children,to dehumanising conditions.

For Hon.Ernest Yaw Anim, the engagement provides an important opportunity to gain deeper insight into the challenges associated with migration and contribute to the development of policies that promote human dignity, social protection and responsible migration management.

Reliable Migration Data Essential for National Development

Another major area of focus was the Global Compact for Safe,Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) and the importance of reliable migration data.

Participants noted that accurate migration statistics are critical to effective national planning,particularly in the provision of healthcare,social protection,education and other essential public services.

The workshop is expected to strengthen the capacity of Parliamentarians and relevant institutions to effectively monitor migration-related policies and programmes and translate discussions into practical interventions.

Hon.Ernest Yaw Anim’s participation further underscores his commitment to parliamentary engagements that enhance his understanding of national and international policy issues and enable him to contribute meaningfully to legislation,oversight and advocacy for the wellbeing of constituents and Ghanaians at large.

As Parliament continues to strengthen its oversight responsibilities,the Koforidua engagement is expected to deepen collaboration among lawmakers,government institutions,development partners and human rights organisations in advancing safe,orderly and regular migration while protecting the dignity and rights of every migrant.
