MTN Group Celebrates Africa Day with Renewed Commitment to Africa’s Digital and Economic

    Transformation
Leading pan-African telecommunications giant MTN Group has reaffirmed its commitment to driving Africa’s digital and economic transformation as the continent marked this year’s Africa Day celebrations.

In a media release issued on May 25, 2026, the company described itself as a proudly African organisation dedicated to unlocking the continent’s enormous potential through digital innovation, connectivity and financial inclusion.

Quoting Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah -“I am not African because I was born in Africa, but because Africa was born in me”-MTN highlighted the importance of African unity, identity and shared progress.

The company, which currently serves more than a quarter of a billion customers across 19 African markets, said its operations continue to create opportunities for millions of people through investments in infrastructure, technology and human capital. MTN employs about 15,000 people from 74 nationalities and ethnic groups, with 87 percent of new recruits in 2025 being employed within their countries of origin.

President and Chief Executive Officer of MTN Group, Ralph Mupita, stated that the company’s pan-African roots remain deep and central to its mission of supporting Africa’s development agenda.

According to him, Africa’s youthful population presents one of the continent’s greatest opportunities, especially as Africa is expected to have the world’s largest workforce by 2040.

MTN revealed that in 2025 alone, it generated approximately R150 billion in economic value across Africa, while contributing R61.1 billion in taxes within its markets. The company also invested R38.5 billion in capital expenditure to strengthen digital and physical infrastructure across the continent.

As part of its social investment initiatives, MTN disclosed that it spent R269 million on corporate social responsibility programmes in 2025, positively impacting about 2.3 million people, mostly young people.

The company further stressed the importance of digital technology in accelerating Africa’s future growth by expanding access to financial services, healthcare, education and entrepreneurship opportunities.

MTN also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting local businesses, promoting skills development and ensuring that economic value created within African countries remains within host economies.

Looking ahead, the company called for greater unity, collaboration and collective action among Africans to build a more inclusive, resilient and prosperous continent.

MTN noted that with sustained investments in digital infrastructure and innovation, Africa can position itself as a globally competitive and self-reliant continent in the digital age.
