Multiple feared trapped as building collapses at Accra Newtown

A four-storey building has collapsed at Accra New Town, near GCB Bank, leaving several people feared trapped beneath the debris.

The incident occurred along the stretch from Nkrumah Circle through New Town, just beyond the bank.

The building, believed to be a school, caved in under circumstances yet to be confirmed.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Headquarters have been deployed to the scene and are currently leading search and rescue operations to save those trapped.

Eyewitnesses say the collapse happened suddenly, prompting panic in the area as residents and passersby rushed to assist before emergency teams arrived.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities yet to confirm the number of persons involved or any casualties.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has visited the site of the collapsed building at the Accra Experimental Basic School in New Town, where rescue teams continue to search for individuals trapped under the rubble.

The uncompleted school structure, reportedly used for Christian worship on Sundays, collapsed earlier today, prompting a rapid response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and the Ghana Police Service.

By the time of the Minister’s arrival, about eight people had been rescued, though authorities have yet to confirm the total number of victims or the extent of injuries.
