Over 900 SMEs Trained as MTN Ghana Expands Digitisation and Business Support Nationwide

Telecommunications giant MTN Ghana has intensified its support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the country, with over 900 businesses already benefiting from its flagship SME Accelerate Programme.

The initiative, which began in 2024 as a one-month SME Month campaign, has now evolved into a comprehensive year-long intervention aimed at strengthening business growth, improving access to funding, and accelerating digital transformation.

Speaking to journalists in Kumasi during the MTN SME Business Clinic, Senior Manager for SME Sales, Abubakri Sadick Mohammed, explained that the expansion was driven by strong demand from businesses seeking continuous engagement and support.

“We realised there were enormous opportunities, and customers wanted continuous engagement, so we expanded it to cover the whole year,” he said.

    Addressing Key SME Challenges

The programme is strategically designed to tackle persistent challenges facing SMEs in Ghana, including:

    Low adoption of digital tools
    Limited market visibility
Restricted access to credit and funding

Mr. Mohammed emphasised that many local businesses struggle to scale due to their inability to embrace digital transformation.
“Digitisation is no longer optional; it is critical for growth,” he stressed.

Driving Digital Adoption and Market Access

To bridge this gap, MTN Ghana is equipping SMEs with digital tools that enable them to:

    Build websites
    Promote products online

Reach customers beyond their immediate locations

This approach is helping businesses expand their market reach and compete more effectively both locally and internationally.

    Improving Access to Credit

The programme also integrates mobile money and fintech solutions to enhance SMEs’ access to financing. By leveraging these tools, businesses can:

    Build financial records
    Improve credibility
Increase their chances of securing loans

    Strategic Partnerships and Mentorship

MTN Ghana is working closely with SMEGA Africa to track the progress of participating businesses and provide post-training support.

In addition, key account managers across the country offer ongoing mentorship to ensure THAT SMEs effectively apply the knowledge gained.

Expansion of Training and Mini MBA Programme

As part of its growth strategy, MTN Ghana plans to:

    Increase training opportunities nationwide

Expand its Mini MBA programme from 50 participants to 150 in 2026

The Mini MBA, organised in collaboration with Nova School of Business, is a 13-week course designed to equip selected SMEs with advanced business management skills.

    Positive Impact on Businesses

Participants have praised the programme for its tangible impact, noting improvements in:

    Packaging
    Product presentation
    Business operations
Many also believe the initiative will help them expand their businesses and create employment opportunities.

“This programme will help our businesses grow and go far. It will also help us employ others,” one participant noted.

    Promoting Ghanaian Products

Mr. Mohammed further highlighted the untapped potential of locally made products, stressing that many high-quality Ghanaian goods remain under-promoted.

He encouraged SMEs to fully utilise digital platforms to increase visibility and access international markets.

Overall, the expansion of the SME Accelerate Programme underscores MTN Ghana’s commitment to empowering small businesses, fostering innovation, and driving economic growth across the country.
