Justice For Maadwoa :Kumasi Police Inspector Jailed for Life Over Murder of Girlfriend

In a landmark judgment that concludes nearly three years of legal proceedings, the Kumasi High Court has sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, popularly known as “Tycoon,” to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah, affectionately called Maadwoa.

The verdict, delivered on Friday, October 24, 2025, was pronounced by Justice Rosemarie Baah-Tosu, following a 5–2 jury decision that found the SWAT officer guilty of murder. The case, which gripped national attention, reignited debates over gun violence and police accountability in Ghana.

The courtroom was filled with family members, friends, and sympathizers of the deceased, alongside tight police security, as the verdict was read.

Nana Addo Barima, an uncle and family spokesperson, welcomed the ruling but voiced concerns about the slow pace of justice.

“We have been on this case for quite some time and now the verdict is out. But we have concerns about the slow pace of justice,” he said.

Barima also made a heartfelt appeal for state support for Maadwoa’s surviving child.

“What does the law say about that? The child needs help, and we appeal to authorities to help us take care of her,” he added.

The incident dates back to April 20, 2023, when Inspector Twumasi shot Maadwoa multiple times at Adum, a bustling business district in Kumasi, following a reported ₵5,000 debt dispute.

The young woman was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Twumasi was later arrested at his hideout in Sekyere, near Effiduase, after a brief manhunt.

During the trial, prosecutors tendered CCTV footage and the service pistol used in the attack as crucial evidence. Despite Twumasi’s claim that he “did not intend to kill,” the court found clear intent and premeditation.

Justice and Reform

The ruling is being hailed as a victory for justice and a wake-up call for Ghana’s security agencies. Legal analysts say the case highlights the urgent need for stricter monitoring of firearm use among law enforcement officers and better psychological evaluation systems within the police service.

For many, the life sentence offers a measure of closure, both for Maadwoa’s grieving family and for a public that has followed the case since 2023.
