GHS Director General Issues Directives Preventing Directors From Charging Toilet Fees In Some Facilities:

The director General of the Ghana Health Service, Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea has directed all regional directors to immediately stop charging patients for using hospital toilets in some health facilities effective April 2025. This move aims to improve patient care and accessibility. The directive emphasizes the importance of providing clean and accessible facilities for patients and their families.

According to him the said facilities are meant to provide comfort and hygiene for patients and visitors, not to generate revenue.

The directive highlights the importance of maintaining clean and comfortable washrooms to prevent infections. Failure to comply will attract sanctions, and regional directors are asked to ensure strict adherence to this directive.
Giving some Key Points Professor Samuel said the directive takes immediate effect.

Immediate Effect- The directive takes immediate effect, and facility heads are expected to comply.
Preventing Exploitation- Professor Akoriyea stresses that charging toilet fees is exploitative and inconsistent with the purpose of healthcare facilities.

Maintaining Hygiene-The Ghana Health Service emphasizes the importance of keeping washrooms clean and comfortable to prevent infections and improve patient satisfaction.

Sanctions for Non-Compliance- Facility heads who fail to adhere to this directive will face sanctions.

This move comes amid concerns over public health, particularly with the rainy season approaching, which increases the risk of waterborne diseases like cholera. Ghana has recorded 6,145 suspected cholera cases, 719 confirmed cases, and 49 deaths since the outbreak began last August.
