MTN Ghana Launches Nationwide MoMo Agent Re-Registration Drive to Boost Security and Trust

MTN Ghana has announced a comprehensive nationwide re-registration exercise for all Mobile Money (MoMo) agents, set to kick off in 2026 as part of its strategy to clean up the mobile money ecosystem and strengthen customer security across the country.

The initiative was unveiled by Abdul-Majeed Rufai, Senior Manager for Commercial Mobile Money at MTN Ghana, during the company’s Mobile Money Agents and Merchants Awards event in Kumasi. According to Rufai, the rollout comes in response to a concerning trend of agents operating using incorrect or fraudulent identities,a loophole that has contributed to fraud in the mobile money space.

“We’ve seen instances where agents are transacting under other people’s details, which opens the door to fraud. This re-registration will help weed out illegitimate operators and ensure only legitimate agents remain active,” Rufai explained.

The exercise, which will run through 2026, aims to verify the identities of all MoMo agents, improve transparency, and protect customers. As part of the effort, MTN Mobile Money is also introducing enhanced security measures, including a new QR-code and agent-ID system to replace reliance on phone numbers during cash-out transactions, a move expected to significantly reduce exposure to fraudsters.

MTN has urged all agents and merchants to cooperate fully with the re-registration process, stressing that stronger verification and accountability across the MoMo network will benefit the entire digital payments ecosystem in Ghana.
