Demo Looms In Kumasi as Flour Users Fight Gov’t, Olam Over Unreduced Price of Flour:
Score of aggrieved flour users in Ashanti region have threatened massive demonstration against government and flour manufacturing companies in Ghana over the recent spiralling prices have pushed their cost of production up, compelling some of its members to shut down their businesses.
This owes to companies’ refusal to reduce the cost of flour despite the Ghana Cedis appreciating against the US dollar since the start of April, 2025.
According to them, the blatant refusal on the part of government to crack the whip to facilitate a reduction is another worrying factor that is fueling their decision to stage the protest.
Secretary for Ashanti Flour Users Association, Mr. Isaac Smart Agyeman was highly peeved during an exclusive interview with the Citizen newspaper.
He lambasted Olam Agri; one of Ghana’s leading manufacturing companies for increasing the price of their flour recently to GHs 730.
He recalled that, when the exchange rate of the local currency started appreciating against the dollar, the price of a bag of flour produced by Olam was GHs 710.
“…so I was expecting Olam to decrease their price now that the cedis has recorded nearly 16 percent against the US dollar”, he said.
He told this medium that in the year 2022 the price was very high.
Reason given to us by producing companies was the high cost of the dollar which adversely affected the purchase of wheat from international markets in that year.
“And so now that the Ghana Cedis value is appreciating, we were expecting that Olam will decrease the cost of a bag of flour the same way some local companies are reducing the cost of baking essentials like margarine and sugar”.
Per his assertion, the increased price of flour by Olam equates cheating and disrespect to bakers in Ghana.
He therefore called on the Ministry of Trade to call producing companies to order, especially Olam Agri.
“We will have no option than stage a demonstration if nothing is done by government”, he noted.
