MobileMoney–UNCDF Partnership Set to Supercharge Women and Youth Entrepreneurs in Three Key Regions

Women and youth-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the Northern, Ashanti, and Western Regions are poised for a major boost as MobileMoney LTD teams up with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) to roll out a transformative digital financial empowerment initiative.

The partnership forms part of the Leveraging Digital Ecosystems for Increased MSMEs’ Productivity Project, funded by the SDG Fund. The goal: to close long-standing financial inclusion gaps and equip underserved businesses with the digital muscle needed to thrive in Ghana’s evolving economy.

MobileMoney LTD is among five institutions selected to design and scale targeted digital financial services and literacy interventions for women and youth-led enterprises. These tailored solutions will tackle critical barriers MSMEs face in payments, access to credit, savings, and insurance-barriers that often limit their growth potential and ability to participate fully in the digital economy.

MobileMoney LTD CEO, Shaibu Haruna, described the initiative as deeply aligned with the company’s mission of empowering every Ghanaian through digital inclusion. He noted that extensive market research by the company uncovered glaring challenges confronting MSMEs, especially women and young entrepreneurs, in accessing suitable financial tools. The new initiative, he said, is a strategic response designed to promote sustainable, inclusive business growth across the targeted regions.

The rollout began with UNCDF-led capacity-building sessions, where MobileMoney LTD teams were trained in Human-Centric Design approaches to shape practical, user-focused financial solutions. Armed with this insight, the company undertook comprehensive market studies and is now moving into prototype development, ensuring the solutions directly match the needs of real businesses on the ground.

Once implemented, the project is expected to open up financial access for previously underserved MSMEs, deepen digital and financial literacy, and create long-term benefits for Ghana’s economic development.

MobileMoney LTD has, over the years, championed women’s economic empowerment through various initiatives-digitizing Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA), providing smartphones to market women, and offering seed capital to women agents to scale their operations. These interventions form part of the company’s overarching mission to increase women’s participation in the digital economy and promote inclusive national growth.

Since its establishment in 2009, MobileMoney LTD-an MTN Ghana subsidiary-has grown to over seventeen million registered subscribers. Offering a wide suite of services in payments, remittances, savings, loans, Insurtech, and Banktech, the company remains a leading force in driving financial inclusion across the country.
