The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has stepped in to provide relief for hundreds of residents arrested during a high-intensity dawn operation carried out by a joint police-military team last Wednesday. The swoop, conducted across four communities, followed violent attacks on officials of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), as well as police and EPA personnel engaged in anti-galamsey duties.
Speaking to journalists, Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Faustiove Appiah-Kanin explained that the Assembly, in collaboration with assembly members and the Fomena District Chief Executive, supplied food and other basic support to the detainees to ensure their welfare while investigations continue.
She noted that the arrests included individuals who may not have been directly involved in the recent disturbances. As a result, she said the Assembly is in talks with the Ashanti Regional Minister to secure the release of those who were picked up unjustly.
Hon. Appiah-Kanin further revealed that the municipality is battling a surge in commercial sex work. She announced a renewed crackdown aimed at cleansing the municipality and restoring Obuasi’s moral and social standards.
She stressed that the Assembly will not relent in tackling illegal mining, lawlessness, and moral decay, assuring residents that the municipality remains committed to safety, order, and community well-being.
