TEWU, GNAT, CLOSSAG AND GPRTU RESPONDS TO THE NDC ORGANIZED LABOUR LEADERS WHO ARE THREATENING NATIONWIDE STRIKE

Our attention has been drawn to a statement by organised labour calling for a Nationwide Strike against Galamsey due to a lack of response from the government .

We are struggling to understand what the lack of response is since we have not seen any scheduled meetings or invitations to leaders of other unions in particular GPRTU,TEWU,GMA and others. We have also not received any letters individually as members of unions asking us to go on a national general strike!

We wish to call our union leaders not to engage in acts that will not only destabilize the country or be playing political football with the critical issue of illegal mining! How many of our labour union members calling for a Nationwide Strike have visited the areas in Ghana severely affected by Galamsey ? how many of them have considered the severe disruption if a state of emergency is implemented in these areas?

Last week we were reliably informed by one of the TUC national executives that the opposition party National Democratic Congress ( NDC) donated 400,000 Ghana cedis to enhance union programs and activities! We have not received visits or any donations from them in the last 7 years! Why now and we declare a nationwide strike on galamsey soon after this when we the members who are workers with families to look after are not aware of any supposed meeting with state actors and stakeholders?

We call on our labour union leaders not to be used by any political party or organisation to engage in any diabolical agenda to cause mayhem and destruction or the country. If we want to fight Galamsey, we should go to the Galamsey areas and engage the people thereby educating them and demanding more from the government to stop mining in all river bodies.Asking us to go and stay at home because of someone’s political agenda is very reckless and selfish!

We, therefore, therefore call on our organised labour leaders and the TUC to return the 400,000 Ghana cedis so our minds are assured that we are not being used by any political party for their agenda.

God bless all our workers. God bless Ghana.

Signed.
