Using Personal related inquiries As Momo Pin Code Increases Fraud-MTN Ghana Warns Public:

MTN Ghana has warned MoMo users against using their date of birth or mobile phone numbers as MoMo PIN codes, as these could easily expose them to fraud. This caution was issued during an anti-mobile money fraud campaign in Accra, which aimed to educate users on safeguarding their accounts. Customers were urged to create strong MoMo PIN codes to better protect their MoMo accounts.

“Using your date of birth or mobile number as your PIN makes it easier for fraudsters to access your account if they get hold of your phone. That’s why we strongly advise using more secured MoMo PIN codes,” said Rena Ankrah, Manager for AML-CFT and Head of Fraud at MTN Ghana.

The campaign, dubbed the “MTN MoMo Fraud Roadshow,” is part of the company’s efforts to mark the 15th Anniversary of MTN Mobile Money in Ghana. The initiative underscores MTN’s commitment to securing customer transactions and preventing fraud. Ankrah also emphasized that fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated in their tactics and urged customers to remain vigilant, especially when using easily guessed information for their PINs.

“Fraudsters are increasingly using advanced methods, and it’s crucial that our customers understand the risks. We aim to empower them with the knowledge to protect their accounts,” Ankrah added.

One common scam involves fraudsters tricking customers into believing they’ve won an award from MTN. Ankrah reiterated that MTN only contacts prize winners through official company numbers, and customers will be asked to visit the nearest office to claim their prizes.

She advised users to be cautious of any other numbers contacting them, as these are likely fraud attempts. MTN Ghana will only contact customers via its official number, 0244300000.
