Amansie Central Fails to Elect Presiding Member After Two Rounds of Voting

The Amansie Central District Assembly in the Ashanti Region has failed to elect a Presiding Member following a misunderstanding between members from the two main political sides.

The election was held on Thursday, February 24, 2026, at the Nana Fosu Kwadwo Abiri II Conference Hall at Jacobu. The process was conducted in a peaceful and orderly atmosphere, reflecting the calm and stability that have characterized the Assembly in recent years.

Three candidates initially filed to contest the position: Hon. Godwin Denkyira, Hon. Isaac Osei Dua (the immediate past Presiding Member), and Hon. Kingsley Adu Amankwaa. However, Hon. Godwin Denkyira stepped down during the process, leaving the contest between Hon. Isaac Osei Dua and Hon. Kingsley Adu Amankwaa.

Out of 42 Assembly Members present, voting figures were affected after the government appointee from Jacobu declined to vote, bringing the total valid votes cast to 40. The sitting Member of Parliament was also excluded from the voting process, in line with the law.

In the first round of voting, Hon. Isaac Osei Dua secured 26 votes, while Hon. Kingsley Adu Amankwaa obtained 14 votes. However, neither candidate attained the required two-thirds (2/3) majority as stipulated by law for the election of a Presiding Member.

A second round of voting was conducted the same day. Hon. Isaac Osei Dua again polled 26 votes (representing 61.9%), while Hon. Kingsley Adu Amankwaa secured 13 votes (31%). Despite maintaining his lead, Hon. Osei Dua still fell short of the constitutionally required two-thirds majority. As a result, the Assembly was unable to elect a Presiding Member.

Speaking after the process, the District Electoral Commissioner, Madam Hagar Reachal Owusu, announced that in consultation with the District Coordinating Director and the District Chief Executive (DCE), the election has been rescheduled to Thursday, February 26, 2026.

In his closing remarks, the District Chief Executive for Amansie Central, Hon. Emmanuel Obeng Agyemang, appealed to Assembly Members to put aside their differences and work together in unity to promote development and strengthen governance in the district.

The outcome highlights the intense political contest within the Assembly, even as many members continue to express confidence in the leadership and performance of the immediate past Presiding Member.
