GNASSM Urges Police to Maintain Integrity in Anti-Galamsey Operations
The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) has called on the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to ensure that the police’s anti-illegal mining unit operates within a clear and lawful mandate.
Michael Adu Gyamfi, Ashanti District Secretary of GNASSM, raised concerns over alleged abuses by the police task force, including the seizure of legally parked excavators and the harassment of miners transporting equipment to approved sites. He described these actions as counterproductive and a potential breeding ground for corruption.
GNASSM reaffirmed its support for government efforts to combat galamsey but stressed the need for accountability and transparency to avoid past failures.
“The unwarranted accosting of Lowbed drivers to transport seized excavators without compensation is another concern that requires immediate attention,” Mr. Adu Gyamfi stated.
He urged the police service to define its operational boundaries clearly and act within the law to ensure lasting results in the fight against illegal mining.
