Armed Military Presence in Tontonkrom Raises Concerns Over Alleged Forced Relocation, vows to resist any false attempt
The chiefs and people of Manso Tontonkrom, located in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region, have expressed deep concern and alarm over the sudden deployment of more than 200 armed military personnel to their community on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
This alarming development occurred just days after the community held a peaceful press conference to publicly oppose what they describe as false claims of eviction and relocation from their ancestral lands. Residents strongly suspect that the move is being orchestrated by Asanko Gold Mine with the backing of certain political figures.
When confronted by residents, some of the military personnel reportedly stated that they were acting on “orders from above” to inspect a disputed mining pit — one which Asanko Gold is now claiming ownership of. This incident has significantly heightened fear and unrest within the community and raises serious concerns about land rights, the rule of law, and the apparent use of state security forces to serve private corporate interests.
The aggrieved residents of Tontonkrom are urgently calling on:
H.E. the President of the Republic of Ghana
The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources
The Inspector General of Police (IGP)
All relevant government authorities and regulatory bodies to investigate this situation and intervene without delay.
Furthermore, the community appeals to civil society organizations, traditional leaders, and the international community to stand in solidarity with the people of Tontonkrom as they seek justice, protection of their lands, and respect for their fundamental human rights.
