The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has successfully foiled an armed robbery plot near Manso Antoakrom in the Ashanti Region, resulting in the death of two suspected armed robbers following a fierce gun battle with police.

The development was made known during a press briefing held today. The intelligence-led operation, according to police, was carried out on December 31, 2025, after credible information indicated that a group of armed robbers had converged along the Antoakrom-Manso Nkwanta road, allegedly preparing to attack unsuspecting commuters.

Addressing the media at the Ashanti South Regional Police Headquarters in Bekwai, the Deputy Regional Police Commander, COP Cephas Arthur, speaking on behalf of the Regional Commander, DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, explained that police swiftly moved to the location upon receiving the intelligence.

He said that upon the arrival of the police team, the suspects opened fire in an attempt to escape. The police, acting in self-defence and with tactical superiority, returned fire, hitting two of the suspects, while two others managed to flee, allegedly with gunshot wounds.

The injured suspects were rescued and rushed to the Bekwai Government Hospital for medical attention but were pronounced dead on arrival.

A search conducted at the scene led to the retrieval of several exhibits, including one AK-47 rifle loaded with four rounds of ammunition, one pump-action gun loaded with four BB cartridges, four spent BB cartridges, and a black bag containing sixteen live cartridges. Police also impounded a black Toyota Voxy vehicle, with registration number AS 6412-25, believed to have been used by the suspects in their criminal operations.

The deceased suspects were later identified as Mohammed Umaru, aged 28, and Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Yaw, aged 26.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects confessed to being involved in several robbery operations across the country.

These include the Mpohor gold robbery, which allegedly resulted in the theft of gold valued at about GH₵3.2 million, the Nyinahini highway robbery, during which a Toyota Voxy driver was killed, and the Cocoa Shed robbery at Sefwi.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti South Regional Police Command has appealed to medical facilities and members of the public to report any persons with suspected gunshot wounds who present themselves for treatment to the nearest police station for the necessary action.

The Police Command further assured the public that, in line with its mandate and the directive of the Inspector-General of Police to intensify the fight against crime, it remains committed to ensuring a safe and peaceful environment for residents to carry out their socio-economic activities without fear.
Investigations are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects and other accomplices linked to the criminal syndicate.
