Major Breakthrough as Police Intensify Operations Against Armed Robbery Networks in the Ashanti South Region

The Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti South Region has intensified its crackdown on armed robbery, successfully dismantling a notorious gang through coordinated intelligence-led operations at Krofrom and Mamponteng near Kumasi.

Addressing the media at a press briefing, the Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, outlined the details of the operations and reaffirmed the command’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the region.

DCOP Nyaaba disclosed that the first operation, conducted on March 26, 2026, led to the fatal shooting of a suspected armed robber, Munir Ali, also known as Petit, aged 27.

Providing operational details, the Ashanti South Regional Operations Commander, ACP Cephas Arthur, explained that the suspect opened fire upon spotting the police team, prompting officers to return fire in self-defense. The suspect sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.

Preliminary investigations, according to the police, revealed that the deceased suspect had confessed to involvement in multiple robbery incidents, including:

A highway robbery attack on the Obuasi-Dunkwa road on March 10, 2026
A daylight robbery between Manso Mpatasie and Manso Odaho on March 3, 2026

A robbery at Mankranso on March 7, 2026
Additional attacks in Tarkwa and Aflao
An unmarked pistol with ammunition was retrieved from the suspect during the operation.

DCOP Nyaaba further revealed that intelligence gathered from the suspect led to the identification of several accomplices, namely Dauda, Orlo, Bash, Emma (alias Abodie), A.T, and the gang leader known as Obey, who was reportedly in possession of two AK-47 rifles and a pump-action gun.

He added that a second operation carried out on March 28, 2026, at Mamponteng resulted in the arrest of the alleged gang leader, Obey, real name Osmanu Razak, aged 28, from Garu.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted involvement in several robberies, including the Mankranso and Tarkwa incidents, but denied participation in the Aflao robbery, attributing it to the deceased suspect and other accomplices.

DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and retrieve the weapons believed to still be in circulation.

He urged residents to cooperate with the police by providing credible and timely information, emphasizing that the command remains resolute in its mission to maintain peace and security across the Ashanti South Region.
