NPP in Decline; Why Justin Frimpong Kodua Must Not Be Given a Second Chance

From Majority to Minority:How the New Patriotic Party Lost 50 Parliamentary Seats Under Kodua’s Leadership

    By,Editor:Justice Baffour-Awuah, Contact: 0246-930931/ dailywatchgh.com

The growing discontent within the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party is no longer a whisper,it is now a loud, undeniable outcry. At the center of this storm is the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, whose tenure is increasingly being described by a group calling itselves National Youth Ambassadors For Change NYAC and party faithful as disastrous, directionless, and politically damaging.

According to the group leader,Mr Kwadwo Sebe, when Kodua assumed office in July 2022 after his election at the National Delegates Conference, expectations were high.

Many believed his youthfulness would inject energy, innovation, and renewed grassroots mobilization into the party. Instead, what has unfolded is widely seen as one of the most painful political declines in the Fourth Republic.

    A RECORD OF DECLINE

Before Kodua took office, the NPP stood strong following the 2020 general elections, commanding a solid 137 parliamentary seats,a position of Majority and influence in Ghana’s Parliament,he emphasized.

However, under his stewardship, the outcome of the 2024 general elections tells a different and troubling story:

2020 (Before Kodua): 137 seats (Majority)

2024 (Under Kodua): 87 seats (Minority)

    Total Loss: 50 parliamentary seats

This dramatic (collapse) is not just numerical,it is symbolic of a party that has lost direction, unity, and voter confidence. The shift from Majority to Minority represents one of the most significant electoral setbacks in Ghana’s democratic history.

    LEADERSHIP OR LIABILITY?

Critics within the party argue that Kodua’s leadership has failed on several fronts:

    Weak grassroots engagement

    #Poor internal communication

Failure to manage internal party conflicts

    Lack of strategic political direction

What was once a vibrant “elephant family” is now grappling with internal fractures, disillusioned supporters, and a shrinking electoral base.

Many party loyalists now describe his leadership as an “albatross” hanging over the party’s future, especially as the NPP begins to position itself for the crucial 2028 elections.

A SECOND TERM: A RISK TOO GREAT?

The idea of granting Justin Frimpong Kodua a second term is already generating fierce resistance among party members. To many, it is not just a political decision,it is a gamble with the very survival of the party.

There is a growing belief that retaining him would:

    Deepen the party’s electoral decline

    Further weaken grassroots morale

Undermine efforts to reclaim power in 2028

    THE WAY FORWARD

The NPP now stands at a crossroads. The decisions made today will determine whether the party rebuilds or continues its downward spiral.

For many observers and insiders alike, one message is clear:

continuity under the current leadership may not be the solution, but rather the problem.
