MTN Rolls Out Africa-Wide Media Innovation Programme for Journalism:

MTN Group, in partnership with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the African Editors Forum (TAEF), has rolled out the Pan-African Media Innovation Programme (MIP)-a bold initiative to strengthen journalism and media resilience across the continent.

Set to welcome its first cohort in 2026, the programme is designed as a 12-week hybrid training that blends online academic modules with hands-on learning in Johannesburg. Journalists from across Africa will gain exposure to topics such as digital transformation, sustainability of independent media, media law and ethics, entrepreneurship, and the impact of emerging technologies on the information ecosystem.

Why This Matters for Africa’s Media

The media industry in Africa is going through massive changes. Disinformation spreads faster than ever, audiences are shifting to digital platforms, and traditional business models for newsrooms are under pressure. Against this backdrop, journalists are expected to remain the backbone of democracy, transparency, and accountability.

The Pan-African MIP was created to respond to these realities. By equipping journalists with practical skills, academic knowledge, and strong professional networks, the programme seeks to promote quality journalism, encourage media innovation, and safeguard independent newsrooms.

    Collaboration for Impact

The strength of the programme lies in its partnerships.

MTN Group is offering resources and reach to make it a truly continental initiative.

University of Johannesburg brings academic expertise to ensure the programme is research-driven and impactful.

African Editors Forum (TAEF) contributes newsroom experience and fosters collaboration among editors and media professionals.

Speaking at the launch, a TAEF spokesperson underscored the value of this collaboration, saying:

Independent media are indispensable to democratic governance, and partnerships such as this provide a pathway to greater resilience, collaboration, and trust.”

    A Step Toward Media Sustainability

Beyond training, the MIP will also help journalists explore new business models and entrepreneurial approaches to ensure sustainability in a time when advertising revenues are shrinking. Fellows will also benefit from networking opportunities that connect them with peers across the continent, sparking ideas and collaborations that go beyond borders.

The launch of the Pan-African MIP represents more than just a training opportunity-it’s a long-term investment in Africa’s democratic future. By nurturing skilled, ethical, and innovative journalists, the programme is expected to play a critical role in shaping the continent’s information ecosystem.

As the first fellows prepare to begin their journey in 2026, the initiative is already being seen as a milestone in African media development. With its focus on resilience, innovation, and collaboration, the Pan-African Media Innovation Programme is set to make a lasting impact on journalism across the continent.
