RETURN LUXURY JETS, PAY COCOA FARMERS- NPP MINORITY BLASTS MAHAMA GOVERNMENT

Ghana’s political landscape is heating up as the Minority in Parliament, led by Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has launched a sharp attack on the government of President John Dramani Mahama, accusing it of abandoning cocoa farmers while indulging in what they describe as lavish and insensitive spending.
Addressing cocoa farmers during a high-profile Minority caucus engagement at Ahafo Ano South West in the Ashanti Region, Hon. Annoh-Dompreh criticized the Mahama administration for what he termed a clear disconnect between governance and the realities of ordinary Ghanaians.
He argued that the government’s reported decision to procure three luxury jets, at a time when cocoa farmers are facing declining incomes and rising production costs, exposes what he described as “a dangerous misplacement of national priorities.”
“At a time when our cocoa farmers are crying for support, this government is busy purchasing luxury jets.
This is not just wrong,it is an insult to hardworking Ghanaians,” he fired.
“The reduction of cocoa prices by over GH₵1,000 has already punished farmers. The least this government can do is to return those jets and invest that money into the cocoa sector.”
Hon. Annoh-Dompreh further accused the government of neglecting a sector that remains the backbone of Ghana’s economy, warning that such decisions could have serious political consequences.
NPP DEFENDS RECORD, QUESTIONS NDC’S PRIORITIES
In a strongly worded intervention, Bantama MP Francis Asenso-Boakye rallied the farmers to critically assess the contrasting records of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He maintained that cocoa farmers experienced better conditions under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, citing improved producer prices, interventions, and consistent support policies under the NPP administration.
According to him, the current hardship facing farmers is a direct result of what he described as “poor policy direction and lack of commitment” by the Mahama-led government.
“The records are clear. Under the NPP, farmers saw real benefits.
Today, they are struggling. The question is simple,who truly cares about the Ghanaian farmer?” he quizzed.
He urged farmers not to lose sight of these differences, emphasizing that their votes and voices remain critical in shaping the country’s leadership and policy direction.
COCOA SECTOR BECOMES POLITICAL BATTLEGROUND
The Minority’s engagement underscores the growing politicization of Ghana’s cocoa sector, as both major political parties position themselves ahead of future electoral contests.
Once regarded as a largely technical and economic space, the cocoa sector is now emerging as a key political battleground, with competing narratives over price stability, farmer welfare, and government priorities dominating public discourse.
Analysts say the Minority’s aggressive posture signals a broader strategy to capitalize on economic frustrations among farmers and rural voters, particularly in cocoa-growing regions.
With tensions rising and rhetoric intensifying, the debate over how best to manage Ghana’s cocoa sector,and the nation’s limited resources,appears set to dominate the political agenda in the months ahead.
