Shock and Outrage as Military Brutality at Asanko Mines Claims Lives of Assemblyman and Resident in Manso Nkwanta
The Manso Nkwanta constituency in the Ashanti Region has been thrown into grief and anger following a brutal incident at the Asanko Mines site, where military personnel allegedly attacked residents, leading to the death of an elected Assemblyman and another community member.
The shocking development has sparked widespread condemnation, with Hon.Tweneboa Kodua Fokuo describing the incident as a heinous attack on democracy, human dignity, and the safety of ordinary citizens.
“For months, residents have complained of intimidation and harassment by security forces at the mine. This time, it has escalated into lethal violence that has cost us precious lives. This cannot and must not be tolerated,” Hon. Fokuo declared in a strongly worded statement.
Calls for Accountability
Hon. Fokuo is demanding urgent action from government institutions, including:
An independent inquiry into the conduct of the military officers involved.
Disciplinary and criminal sanctions against those directly responsible.
A full-scale investigation into the role of Asanko Mines in the incident.
Compensation and recognition for the bereaved families, especially the late Assemblyman who served with dedication.
Psychosocial support for traumatised residents.
He also called on Parliament to summon the Ministers of Defence, Interior, and Lands and Natural Resources to provide answers to Ghanaians on why the military is being deployed in private corporate operations.
A Wake-Up Call
“This is not just about one incident,” Hon. Fokuo warned. “It must be a wake-up call for Ghana to rethink the relationship between mining companies, security institutions, and host communities. The blood of our brothers must not go in vain.”
He further appealed to the media, civil society, faith-based organizations, and the international community to join hands with the people of Manso Nkwanta in demanding swift justice and the protection of human rights.
