NPPs 2024 setback linked to Mamprusi-Kusasi rivalry, says Flagbearer hopeful:
Abetifi MP and NPP flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, says tribal undercurrents in northern Ghana cost the New Patriotic Party (NPP) dearly in the 2024 elections.
Speaking to party faithful on Saturday, August 23, the former Agric Minister argued that the party’s choice of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer unintentionally deepened historic divisions.
“Kufuor won the Kusasi vote. Akufo-Addo also won there. But because of the Mamprusi-Kusasi fight, and because our candidate came from one side, we lost everything-from Oti to Upper East, Upper West and Northern Region,” Acheampong explained.
He stressed that the defeat was not about Dr. Bawumia’s ability or performance, but the political climate.
“We lost our seats because of the candidate we presented. Bawumia may only be a victim of circumstance. It wasn’t his fault-the timing just didn’t favour him,” he noted.
Dr. Bawumia, who served as Ghana’s Vice President from 2017 to 2025, failed to lead the NPP to victory in his first presidential bid.
Positioning himself as a contender for 2028, Dr. Acheampong urged the party to learn from the painful loss and choose a unifying candidate capable of rallying the base and reclaiming power from the NDC.
