DADWENE, Ashanti Region,Tensions are rising in Dadwene, Adansi North District, as scores of women marched to Kumasi Central Prison yesterday, demanding the release of their relatives detained in connection with attacks on Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials.
A joint police-military operation earlier this week resulted in the arrest of 372 men, all of whom were remanded for two weeks by the Kumasi High Court. The sweep, aimed at cracking down on violent attacks against EPA personnel, has sparked outrage among community members who insist many of those arrested are innocent.
“We are heartbroken. Our men have done nothing wrong. They were wrongly arrested,” one of the women told journalists during the protest. Many carried placards calling for justice and an end to indiscriminate arrests.
Local opinion leaders have joined the call for the government to review the detentions, arguing that innocent men are being punished while the real perpetrators remain free. The unrest has left communities tense, with women and children particularly anxious.
Residents are urging security agencies to adopt more targeted operations in the future to prevent innocent citizens from being caught in broad crackdowns.
